As a replacement for Window's Notepad, NotePad is incredible, because it has so many more features and abilities, while still being incredibly lightweight and stable. NotePad is a functional application, but it won't win any prizes for looks, and many of the functions are only useful to programmers. However, anyone who writes text will find Notepad a useful tool, and much better than Windows Notepad. NotePad has more features than you're ever likely to use, but is one of the best and most complete text editors available. Notepad is a free source code editor (and Notepad replacement), which supports several programming languages, running under the MS Windows environment. This project, based on the Scintilla edit component (a very powerful editor component), written in C with pure win32 api and STL (that ensures the higher execution speed and smaller size of the program), is under the GPL Licence.

By Anonymous I like an older version (5.6.8). Older versions included an add-in, TextFX, which has a whole bunch of great text manipulation features all in one place. The problem was that when they went for improved Unicode support (for filenames in non-Latin character sets, I think), TextFX broke, so they took it out. I understand there are new add-ins that do similar things, but I like having it there when I install, and - as I said - all in one place. And all of my filenames are in English, so I lose nothing by not having the full unicode support (it supports unicode file contents just fine).
Anyway, it's a great free (as in free beer) program. I like the tabbed multidocument interface, line numbers on or off, control over the EOL characters and more generally, the character encoding of your files (I occasionally use it to convert from one encoding to another), multifile search and replace, file types with associated color-coding, and the fact that under it all, they're still just text files. Pros: Easy, clean UI, fully featured, handles large files with no problem, stable as a rock. And I really like the TextFX add-in that came bundled with the older versions.
